Mayor Mike Bodker Presents the State of the City to Johns Creek Citizens

Johns Creek Mayor Mike Bodker encouraged residents to help shape the city’s future during his annual State of City Address at the Atlanta Athletic Club on March 6.

A major part of his vision is the development of theDistrict, a planned live and work space, which would be located on 728 acres near Technology Park.

Mayor Bodker stressed that active participation in public input meetings is needed to ensure that plans like the District can solve the city’s economic viability challenges.

“You are the history makers who will determine what Johns Creek looks like 20, 50 and 100 years from now.”

JCCA Education Workshop Advises Citizens on Pool Safety

The JCCA Education Workshop opened up with a presentation from Craig Sears of Sears Pool Management and Johns Creek police officer Meberg. Both men stressed that everyone with a pool needs to be observant and proactive before the summer swim season begins.

According to Craig Sears, now is the time to de-winterize your home, invite pool inspectors to perform an inspection, and most importantly — to swim at your own risk.

Officer Meberg emphasized the same type of attention to detail after telling the room of 13 JCCA members, “Pools for some reason, have always been a magnet for trouble.” The majority of questions soon dealt with how to monitor neighborhoods against vandalism and the best way to discourage teen loitering in community pool bathrooms.

Other tips of advice include:

  • Communicate to other residents if you have an event at the pool
  • Download the NextDoor app so you can be informed about what’s going on in your neighborhood
  • Report all vandalism
  • Replace your deck equipment before Mid-April
JCCA Member Sundari Chetty and Craig Sears hold up the SPLASH poster which is available for all JCCA members to display at their community pools. Contact Craig Sears for more information.

You may always contact communications@jccahome.org for more information on pool safety. The next JCCA workshop will take place on March 31. More details to come!

Are You Ready for Summer Fun in the Water?

The Greater Atlanta Water Safety Alliance Has Some Things That You Need to Know!

The Greater Atlanta Water Safety Alliance was formed in the Spring of 2012 by Craig Sears of Sears Pool Management with a multifold mission to:

  • Reduce the incidence of drowning as a leading cause of accidental childhood death.
  • Reduce the exposure and transmission of Recreational Water Illnesses.
  • Increase the popularity of recreational swimming.
  • Advocate swim lessons, learn to swim programs, and the sport of competitive swimming.

Each year the alliance accomplishes its mission by conducting various water safety seminars and workshops customized for different groups within the community: parents, children, property managers, HOA and club board members, parks and recreation department personnel, pool maintenance personnel, lifeguards, swim coaches and instructors.

The seminars are free of charge and can cover a wide variety of topics, including: RWIs, drowning statistics, aquatic injury & drowning case studies, drowning prevention programs & strategies, children’s water safety programs, aquatic risk management, reducing facility liability, lifeguards vs. pool attendants, lightning safety, VGB and ADA compliance.

The Greater Atlanta Water Safety Alliance is a chapter of the National Drowning Prevention Alliance.

If you are interested in a water safety seminar for your community or place of work, worship, or school, please contact Craig Sears at 770.993.7492 or by email at craig@searspool.com.

Johns Creek Zoning Updates

Case RZ-15-002 received an unanimous vote of 7-0 on March 3rd. This follows the City Staff’s Report recommendation to deny this application, as well as the variances that were requested.

The Planning Commission will follow City Staff’s Report and recommend that the City Council deny this plan on March 16, 2015.  The JCCA will make a statement on behalf of its member, Autry Township, to also request that the City Council deny this application.

Case RZ-15-003’s developer has asked for a deferral in the hopes of working with the community to come up with a plan that will be supported by the surrounding residents.

The City Staff Report recommended denial of the application and the Planning Commission recommended for the City Council to defer the case for 90 days. The City Council will decide whether or not to defer the case on March 16, 2015.
