Johns Creek Becomes First Municipality in the World to Share Business Data on Waze
Finding a business – and driving to it – in Johns Creek is now easier when using Waze due to a groundbreaking expansion of the City’s Waze partnership.

As the first municipal partner in Georgia since August 2015, Johns Creek has been sharing real-time road closure and construction information Waze to help drivers improve their commute and “outsmart traffic.”  This partnership expansion involves sharing business locations derived from Johns Creek license applications and renewals in a map-friendly format that Waze can easily consume.

“If you search for a place to eat or shop in an app on your phone, you’re most likely searching by the name of the business and not a specific address,” says Nick O’Day, Johns Creek’s senior GIS manager and architect of the city’s Open Data Portal.  “By sharing business information to Waze with the business name tied to a latitude and longitude, it makes the experience faster and easier.”  Waze pulls information from the City’s Open Data Portal automatically and, as a result, the process doesn’t cost the city anything.

“We are proud to be the first municipality in the world to use this technology to better serve our City,” said Mayor Mike Bodker. “Using this technology, our citizens are better equipped to travel our roads and get to local businesses – faster and easier.”

Waze, the world’s largest crowd-sourced traffic navigation app, likes getting data from partner cities because it can immediately use it.   Prior to the initial import of data from the City, the app recorded around 500 unique businesses in Johns Creek that were manually added over time by Waze users (called “Wazers.”)

The first import brought in the remaining 1,000+ Johns Creek businesses in one massive update.  As new businesses move into Johns Creek, these locations will be added to the City’s Open Data Portal and therefore will be pulled into Waze according to their update schedule.

“Today, Johns Creek is leading the Waze Connected Citizens Partner Network in innovation as the first municipality to share real-time business location data with Waze,” said Paige Fitzgerald, Waze’s Connected Citizens Program Manager.

“This allows Waze users to navigate easily to any Johns Creek business and stay up to date on changing business locations. With the addition of this new data set, users will be better able to patronize local businesses.”

Rezoning Cases Scheduled for Early 2017
The Planning & Zoning Commission meeting for December 6, 2016 has been canceled.
the public participation meeting is Thursday, December 8th and all citizens will be able o review zoning cases on that date. The cases include:


Special Use Permit (SUP-16-001) for Verizon to construct a 70″ cell tower (disguised as a tree) at 10475 Medlock Bridge Road (east side between Wilson & Parsons Roads.)

Rezone 4.4 acres at 11350 Technology Circle to TR (RZ-16-006) so as to construct 50 townhomes ata density of over 12 units per acre. 

Rezone parcel at Jones Bridge & Taylor Roads from OI to C1 (RZ-16-007) with a Special Use Permit to allow multiple self-storage (SUP-06-003).

Level 2 Drought Initiates Water Restrictions
Gov. Nathan Deal has approved a Level 2 Drought Response designation, which includes Fulton County and the City of Johns Creek.
Level 2 Drought Response adds restrictions to outdoor uses. Outdoor landscape watering is only allowed two days per week determined by odd and even-numbered addresses. Even-numbered addresses and properties without numbered addresses may water on Wednesday and Saturday between 4 p.m. and 10 a.m. Odd-numbered addresses may water Thursday and Sunday between 4 p.m. and 10 a.m.

Prohibited outdoor water uses under Level 2 Drought Response include:
  • Washing hard surfaces such as streets and sidewalks
  • Water for ornamental purposes, such as fountains
  • The use of fire hydrants, except for firefighting and public safety
  • Non-commercial washing of vehicles
  • Non-commercial pressure washing
  • Fundraising car washes

Outdoor Burning Temporarily Banned in Johns Creek
Due to the current weather conditions, outdoor burning is temporarily prohibited in Johns Creek.

The extreme dry weather, low humidity, and current fire danger rating make outdoor burning an unsafe act, according to Johns Creek Fire Marshal Chad McGiboney.

“We want to make sure all residences and properties in our community are safe and therefore we need to take this precautionary measure,” said McGiboney. “The ban will be in place until weather conditions improve.

City Completes Year 2 of Repaving Program 
The Johns Creek Public Works Department has finished its second round of a four-year program to repave its neighborhood streets.

Repaving crews resurfaced 34.1 miles of streets in 26 subdivisions, including Sugar Mill, one of the City’s largest. The City increased funding for the project from $1.5 million to $5 million in the Fiscal Year 2016 in an effort to accelerate the repaving program timeline by a year from 2019 to 2018.
“The Public Works Department has done an exceptional job continuing the multi-year initiative to resurface neighborhood streets,” said Mayor Mike Bodker. “By accelerating the program this year, more neighborhoods are enjoying repaired streets and enhanced curb appeal at a faster rate.”
In 2011, a consultant drove a specially equipped vehicle down each of Johns Creek’s streets to gauge their conditions.  Using that data as a guide, the Public Works staff developed arepaving plan for the City’s subdivisions.

The physical survey of city streets revealed that many of them had a substandard Pavement Quality Index (PQI), a scale developed by the Corps of Engineers to measure cracking, potholes, rutting, weathering and other factors. Low PQI scores reflect poor condition of pavement. The lower the PQI score, the higher the ranking when scheduling the repaving.

In 2015, the repaving crews resurfaced 34.33 miles of streets in 34 subdivisions. Johns Creek spent approximately $5.83 million in 2015 toward maintaining neighborhood streets.

City Launches Annual Toys for Tots Campaign
This holiday season bring a smile and a message of hope to a less-fortunate child’s face by donating a new toy to the City of Johns Creek’s 10th annual “Toys for Tots” campaign.

Donated toys, which will be accepted Nov. 14 through Dec. 15, should be unwrapped, but still in their original packaging. Typically, most donated toys are appropriate for small children, but there is a large need for youngsters 10 to 12 years old.

“Toys for Tots” donations can be dropped off at the following locations:

Sign Up for Citizens Fire Academy
Johns Creek residents can get a detailed look at how their fire department operates when the Johns Creek Fire Department (JCFD) launches its next Citizens Fire Academy, Feb. 21, 2017.

During the 10-week course, participants will learn about JCFD operations, fire tactics and strategies and aspects of fire prevention and investigation techniques.
The academy meets Feb. 21, 28, March 11, 14, 21, April 1, 4, 11, 29 and May 2 and includes classroom instruction (equipment, fire prevention); demonstrations (CPR, investigation techniques); and practical exercises (fire ground training, emergency medical exercises).

The Citizens Fire Academy is open to Johns Creek residents or those who work in Johns Creek age 18 and older who successfully pass the application process and a criminal history check.

Ocee Park Youth Baseball Registration Open Through Dec. 14 
Spring will be here before we know it and with spring comes the start of America’s favorite pastime! Registration for the Ocee Park Athletic Association Spring baseball leagues has begun and runs through Dec. 14, 2016.

Practices begin February 6, 2017 at Ocee Park, 10900 Buice Road, and the first games are scheduled for March 4, 2017.  The Spring season extends through May 24, 2017.

Teams are open to boys and girls ages 4 years to 18 years old and everyone from the seasoned veteran to the beginner is welcome into the program.

T-ball registration fees are $170 for Johns Creek and Alpharetta residents and $255 for non-residents.  All other baseball leagues have fees of $200 for Johns Creek and Alpharetta residents or $300 for non-residents.
